“Spectrumed” offers works by artists Torkwase Dyson, André Leon Gray, Morolake Odeleye, and Fahamu Pecou that consider social influences on and against today’s global political climate. The collected works demonstrate the collision of societal forces on any one individual and suggest the myriad connected spheres which any one of the candidates’ platforms may affect.

Fashion Ready – Raleigh was overdue for a high-end fashion show!

Contrary to general perception by locals and new implants to the area, Raleigh and its surroundings areas proofed otherwise when over 650 fashionistas and trend setters, both men and women, came out this past Saturday to Strut’08 in North Hills. Former New Yorker who has been living in Raleigh for some time now, Brian Williams was the brainchild behind this event. The hour and half production included music by DJ Grant, live performances by dancers from The North Carolina Dance institute and fashions featuring National designers with roots from Raleigh such as Miranda Laughlin from Bleighm and Victor Lytvinenko from Verses Jeans de high design jeans for men. These other fashion designers and boutiques came together to raise funds for Wake Country agency, Interact, supporting domestic violence victims, Interact. Over $15,000 was raised and the little black dress by Operah was auctioned off for over $6,000 to local’s Bob Gross and Rodolfo Gonzalez.Saturday night was a very cosmopolitan night for Raleigh where in attendance I came across businessmen and entrepreneurs who also live in New York, Miami, Turkey and other places in Europe. This area is becoming much more fashion-forward ready than ever before. Strut fashion promises to be an annual affair….stay tuned for future news!

Celebrate First Friday on Friday, May 2. First Friday is a free event that is open to the public and attracts hundreds of people to downtown the first Friday of every month. The First Friday Gallery Walk offers the public an opportunity to enjoy the openings of new gallery exhibitions, eat downtown and explore the art community. Come join the hundreds of people who already enjoy this very popular self-guided gallery walk and see how it has changed.
Take advantage of the free First Friday Trolley which runs from 6 pm-9 pm with seven different stops throughout downtown. Also be sure to pick up a copy of the 2008 map/guides available at all of the 48 participating galleries, restaurants and retail outlets. The map/guide also highlights the First Friday Specials offered by the restaurants and bars. Look for the First Friday flag to easily locate participants.
Beginning in May, Purple Armchair will be part of the First Friday Gallery Walk in downtown Raleigh. Purple Armchair is a membership marketplace with everything from original artwork to antiques to vintage to photography, and beyond ! The company mission is to offer customers a variety of products for all ages and all tastes. The inventory changes regularly as they add new members. On Friday, May 2, Purple Armchair will be raffling off two original pieces of framed artwork as their First Friday Special.
